2004 Daytona 250cc Heat #1 (Travis Pastrana’s Last Heat Win)

Posted on

This is the first 250cc qualifying heat from the 2004 Daytona Supercross by Honda.

In 2004, an old Supercross friend returned to the series. That old friend was 2001 125cc East Supercross champ, Travis Pastrana. Travis had been on the sidelines recovering from another knee injury that happened at the Glen Helen Motocross opener in May 2003. At the time, Travis' last Supercross appearance was at round 2 of the 2003 season at Phoenix when he took a 12th.

In this heat race, Travis battled with AMSOIL Honda's Kevin Windham; it made fans remember back to 2002 when Windham and Pastrana were teammates under Team Suzuki. Travis' last heat win came at this exact facility in 2002. At then, Travis was dealing with a deadly case of the flu from Atlanta where he skipped an autograph session and did not participate in the opening ceremonies. He would pull out of the main event while running 2nd behind Honda's Ricky Carmichael, but Travis' season took another turn then when he literally passed out on his motorcycle. Since then, Travis had only competed in 2 Supercross races and 3 Motocross races.

Pastrana then pleased the MX community with an announcement. He was going to compete in the 2005 Supercross season under a Supercross-only contract from his own private Suzuki team. Travis started out decent with a 10th in the Anaheim 1 opener, but problems quickly followed again. He got hurt at Phoenix and went back to the sidelines until Dallas. Sadly, a crash with 125cc West rider, KTM's Jay Marmont resulted in another knee injury. Travis came back for a 2nd place in the semi, but suffered from dizziness and had a bad gash on his leg; he ended up not reporting to the gate for the 250cc main.
